Classically, it was only the very rich who could afford to be immortalized by fawning portraitists. That’s why you won’t find a ton of paintings of broken losers on display at the Met. Thankfully, local artist Matt Bliss addressed this sad artistic lack several years ago when he launched the first Portraits of Comedians art show at Jameson’s in downtown Eugene. This Friday, Portraits of Comedians returns with more than 20 works by local artists paying tribute to their favorite funny people — including Jimmy Singleton's spot-on depiction of Robin Williams (pictured). To celebrate, Bliss has lined up an impressive roster of local comedians to perform at the opening reception, which coincides with Lane Arts Council’s First Friday ArtWalk. What's more, check back on May 20 when local comedian Seth Milstein hosts a wild Portraits of Comedians variety show at Luckey's featuring even more stand-up, as well as live music and burlesque performances.
