CALENDAR At this point millennial moviegoers might have some trouble believing that Robert De Niro used to mean something. Decades prior to pissing away practically all of his cred on mystifyingly daft comedy horseshit like Dirty Grandpa and Meet the Fockers, De Niro was synonymous with gritty intense New York underground cinema. Knowing what we know today about De Niro’s career trajectory, some of the sting is removed from his Jake LaMotta impression from Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull or his portrayal of an isolated Vietnam vet in Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter. Anymore, watching early De Niro is as heartbreaking as listening to early Rolling Stones records after watching their limp Super Bowl halftime performance from 2006. One movie, however, which refuses to be deflated by De Niro’s late-career clown act is the 1976 Taxi Driver, which screens for free at the Wildish Theater this week. Taxi Driver is as potent and disquieting today as it was when I first watched it more than 20 years ago. Don’t miss seeing it on the big screen.
