WHAT’S HAPPENING THURSDAY APRIL 14 When things on Earth got too rough, the super-rich fled to Mars, leaving behind a scorched, polluted wasteland. Martian man-ape Oliver Shoback pilots his first official mine-scouting mission to Earth when his spaceship is shot out of the sky over the barren deserts of upstate New York. Shoback, the foul-mouthed half-chimp stoner, is primarily concerned with sparking up a joint when bandits try shaking him down at gunpoint. Luckily, our simian hero is rescued in the nick of time by an exploding teddy bear lobbed by a creepy hermit wearing a gas mask and HazMat suit. Welcome to Private Posse, the unpredictable and joyously brutal, hand- drawn sci-fi adventure comic by local writer-illustrator Tereso Cobián. Cobián, who signs cop- ies of his new comic at a reception this week at the UO, grew up skateboarding in Cal Young Skatepark. He began working on Private Posse about four years ago, after taking a nasty spill off his skateboard and breaking some ribs. Laid up awhile, Cobián turned to drawing. The artist says Private Posse is heavily influenced by his love of ’90s-era rap music, “that rugged, raw basement music that doesn’t even sound good, but people still listen to.” Like the music that inspired it, Private Posse is certainly crude and unvarnished. That’s what gives it its irrev- erent spirit, and fills the pages with an anything-can-happen-next excitement. The first book took Cobián a few years to complete. Volume 2, he says, won’t take nearly as long. Let’s hope.
