WHAT’S HAPPENING THURSDAY Guys like Tom Waits and Nick Cave wish they were as authentically dark as Kurt Weill (sounds like “vile”). The Weimar-era composer’s fascination with petty crime, poverty and the violence of gutter life soak the murder ballads of his best known work, the Threepen- ny Opera, like fresh-spilled blood. Even if Weill’s name sounds new to you, you’ve probably heard pop music renditions of “Mack the Knife” — with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht — sung by Bobby Darin or Jim Morrison and The Doors. Joined by the Island Jazz Quintet, Wash- ington-based jazz singer Maggie Laird takes a crack at selections from Weill’s oeuvre this weekend at The Jazz Station in downtown Eugene. Weill’s moody compositions evoke the smell of stale smoke and the sound of rain hitting the cobblestone streets of the Jewish ghetto in Dessau, Germany, where Weill was born and raised.
