If only Indian scholar Vandana Shiva were eligible to run for president. With more than 20 books written on subjects ranging from the importance of sustainable farming practices to the harmful effects of globalization, there’s probably no single bigger thorn in the side of companies like Monsanto and organizations like the World Bank. Part of the Dempsey Environmental Lecture Series, Vandana Shiva is scheduled to speak at Willamette University in Salem on Thursday, March 17. Shiva’s fight, if it can be summed up neatly, is largely against multi- national corporations who seem to never run out of devious schemes to take control of our shared natural resources and the means of food production. Shiva says common business practices by multinational corporations keep billions of people around the world in poverty. And when she says we can win the fight against the greedy behemoths, we believe her. Shiva was a leading voice in the movement to keep Coca-Cola from privatizing water supplies in her native India. The courts ultimately ruled against the sugar-drink giant and ordered Coca-Cola to close its plant in Plachimada. “Destruction of water resources and catchments and aquifers is a form of terrorism,” Shiva wrote in her 2002 book Water Wars. "Denying poor people access to water by privatizing water distribution or pollut- ing wells and rivers is also terrorism.” Don’t miss a chance to hear Shiva speak.
