But that sort of classification is about as accurate as calling Bitches Brew a jazz record or Captain Beefheart a rock star. Sure, it gets you in the right galaxy, but it does nothing to describe the bizarre constellation of fractured beats, warped vocals and occult imagery the group has formed during their six years together. The Seattle-based duo’s lead voice — Ishmael Butler (formerly of Digable Planets) — has often used “abstract” to describe the Shabazz Palaces OVERTIME TAVERN West Side Blues Jam—8:30pm; Open jam, n/c REALITY KITCHEN Acoustic Reality—5pm; Open mic, n/c RESTOBAR Steven McVay—5pm SIDE BAR WDYK Trivia—9pm; n/c TERRITORIAL VINEYARDS Holler & The Hive—7pm; n/c WANDERING GOAT Dobis, /root_ DIR, Zane Jankins—6:30pm; Punk, grind, $3-$5 WAYWARD LAMB “I’m Too Sexy” w/Angelica D’Vil & DJ John the Revelator—10pm; n/c WOW HALL International Guitar Night—8pm; Acoustic guitar masters, $25-$30 FRIDAY 1/29 5TH ST. Butler and Maraire cryptically released two EPs before emerging from hiding in 2011 with their shadowy full-length Black Out. Their latest, 2014’s Lese Majesty, has seen the group plunge deeper into abstraction: Maraire’s mutated psychedelia moves between bangers like “#CAKE” and woozier, atmospheric interludes while Butler delivers lines like “blackness is protracted and abstracted by the purest.” LAVELLE WINE BAR Gumbo Groove—6:30pm; n/c LEVEL UP DJ food stamp—9pm; Rap, breaks, soul, n/c LUCKEY’S Ready Steady Soul Club—10pm; $3 MAC’S Bottlneck Blues Band— 8pm; $5 MCDONALD THEATRE The Wood Brothers—8pm; $25-$27 MCSHANE’S Dark Buffalo—9pm; Rock, n/c MOHAWK Country Wide—9pm; Country, n/c NEW HOPE AUDITORIUM Dréos—7pm; Celtic, $15 O BAR Karaoke w/Jared—9pm; n/c OAKSHIRE Fiddlin’ Sue Band— 4:30pm; n/c O’DONNELL’S Karaoke—9pm OLD NICK’S Pickaxe Preacher, Snow Dragon, Broken Dead— 9pm; $5 PIZZA RESEARCH INSTITUTE Olem Alves Duo—6:30pm; n/c PORKY’S PALACE Karaoke— 8pm RAGOZZINO HALL UO Opera Ensemble “Orfeo ed Euridice”— 7:30pm; $5-$10 SAGINAW VINEYARD Jackie Jae & Jason Cowsill—6pm; n/c TAYLOR’S DJ Victor—10pm; Hip hop, dance, n/c TERRITORIAL VINEYARDS ButterChuck, Town & Country Blues Band—7pm; Healthy Moves fundraiser, don. Better still, the group chose a worthy opener to guide us into the Shabazz Palaces world in THEESatisfaction singer SassyBlack, whose eastern-inflected vocals and space-funk sound orbits in the same sonic constellation. Sassy Black and Porter Ray join Shabazz Palaces 8:30 pm Saturday, Jan. 30, at WOW Hall; $12 adv., $15 door. — J.D. Swerzenski eugeneweekly.com • January 28, 2016 23
