WHAT’S HAPPENING Barely old enough to drink a beer, Ventura rapper Super Duper Kyle (né Kyle Harvey) released his second album, Smyle, late last year. And the songs on it spring gleefully around like a wild herd of toddlers snorting Pixy Stix and mainlining Sunny D. Super Duper Kyle's buoy- ant optimism draws lots of attention for subverting rap music expec- tations. Swagger and trash talk have long been genre mainstays, and Super Duper Kyle speaks both languages fl uently. But he buff s them till they shine like new with a joyously deviant glow. Case in point: Smyle’s victorious high water mark, a rad pop song titled “Really? Yeah!” which is catchier than a dozen Mike Piazzas. It perfectly nut- shells Kyle’s super duper ethos. “Really? Yeah!” shows us a friendly kid having the time of his life on the crest of a sick wave, momen- tarily wonderstruck by his own good fortune. “My worst shit’s really good,” Kyle raps, “and their best shit’s really bad.” Don't needlessly complicate what can be said plainly. Because his mood is practically bulletproof, Super Duper Kyle — who performs Wednesday at WOW Hall — even sets aside time to voice the dissenting opinions of haters who knock him for being “fucking corny” and having bad teeth. Dude's riding too high and speeding too fast right now to give half a shit what critics are gonna say. The only trouble is, Kyle’s so upbeat that he’s testing the upper limits of hip-hop gaiety. If there is such a thing as rap music that’s too cheerful, Super Duper Kyle, in full-on Icarus glory, will be the fi rst to know.
