Truffl es, those delicious umami-fl avored fungi that make the average french fry into
something truly special, are the reason for the season when it comes to the annual Oregon
Truffl e Festival. And you can’t have a good truffl e without a good dog. No, seriously, the
best way to fi nd a tasty Oregon truffl e is by using your trusty hound to sniff it out. Dogs,
from imported Italian Lagotto Romagnolos to pit bulls, can sniff out a ripe truffl e in just
seconds, and the second annual Joriad North American Truffl e Dog Championship contest
is back in town to separate the fungus sniff ers from the butt sniff ers. You can catch specta-
tor-friendly day one of the action Jan. 16 here Eugene. Day two is the fi eld trials, and since
romping through the woods isn’t a great spectators sport, you can attend the awards gala,
eat truffl es, drink wine and “meet and greet” the truffl e dog fi nalist at Willamette Valley
Vineyards in Turner. For those who prefer their food without pups you can attend the OTF
itself Jan. 22-24 in Newburg/Yamhill and Jan. 29-31 in Eugene.
