Their screeching/rumbling 2014 release, Yellow Kidney, lends the impression that it’s always 3am and you’re stuck underground staring into dark, humming tunnels waiting to see the headlamps of an early train that never appear. Kidney starts easy, with "One Train," a song that casts harsh fl uorescent light on New York's cruddy, assaultive mug. Fuck Sinatra: 8.4 mil- lion New Yorkers will tell you the city that never sleeps isn't an oyster bed with pearls for the taking. Instead, like SMTB's music, it's an unfriendly grind, with occasional beauty. Once front- man Julian Cashwan Pratt’s crisp, hurling rapped-out lyrics get rolling, they slap hard against the mind’s windshield and collect there like it’s raining wet Polaroid exposures of SMTB’s fl inty home turf, the oft-ignored Queens. Chap-lipped sludge rock, folk metal (there's banjo in it), NYC dinge-core kids SMTB — performing Monday at The Boreal — kick and scream, fi erce and frightened, like a cornered animal. But like a prickly beast with its back to the wall, SMTB gives off the pheromonal reek of fear, anger and bewilderment. Perhaps they know that, reared up at full height, their tender underside is vulnerable. But what are you going to do? The best off ense is a mean off ense.
