WHAT’S HAPPENING While we all enjoy the crocuses that poke out their purple- and-white heads in late January and early February, it’s hard to wait for the cherry blossoms, daff odils and tulips to catch up. Here’s a chance to see an indoor splash of color to temper the dreariness outside: The Mary’s Peak Orchid Society Show & Sale, where orchid enthusiasts will display and sell dozens of orchids in full majestic bloom. The orchid’s name actually comes from a Greek word meaning “testicle,” and the mind wanders as to why that is (Google it; you know you want to). Regardless or perhaps because of their saucy name, orchids are among the two largest families of fl owering plants (Oregon has at least 40 native species), and they’re highly popular as house plants, prized among collectors and overall just really pretty. “The club is interested in orchid conservation and propagation and welcomes people of all experience levels,” says Jennifer Gervais, club member and wildlife ecologist for the Oregon Wildlife Institute. She says orchid owners are welcome to bring in their ailing fl owers for free advice from the experts, but for fungus or bug infestations, make sure to bag your plant to keep the disease from spreading.
