The self-proclaimed “cowboy philosopher” will be completing a busy year when he rolls into town with his “Bipolar Tour: A Fact Finding Mission”: He released a live solo album, Live from Woodstock, he collaborated with his Texas pal Willie Nelson on the new book Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die, he started hawking his own Kinky Friedman Cigars and Man in Black Tequila and he’s testing the waters (OK, he’s practically swimming in them) for a 2014 run for governor of Texas. “Running in the Democratic primary is really smart — if I’m going to do it — because Jesus Christ could not get elected as an independent in Texas,” Friedman tells EW. “I’m the only Democrat who could win independent and Republicans’ votes.” But enough about politics, let’s talk about music because the Kinkster has a lot to say. “Country music, as I know it, is kind of a lost art,” he says. “Everyone has their own CD release party, everyone’s got a band ... there don’t seem to be any heroes anymore.” He continues, “Writing and music — they are acts of truth, it’s a high calling.” The Bipolar tour, which includes 27 shows in 26 days (the last show is in Eugene) “runs on adrenalin” and has the spirit of “Townes Van Zandt and Woodie Guthrie and a little bit of Judy Garland.” He will be playing some of his classics: “Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed” and “They Ain’t Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore.” The last time Friedman came through Eugene was so long ago it was when “Christ was a cowboy.” Come 2014, maybe you can tell your friends that the governor of Texas serenaded you. Kinky Friedman plays with Brian Molnar 8 pm Thursday, Dec. 20, at WOW Hall; $30 adv., $35 door. — Alex Notman
