Halloween is on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Ouja Boards not included. 18 October 25, 2012 • eugeneweekly.com MIKE SHEAHAN The history of Halloween is a long one. Scholars maintain that it began with pagan celebrations of the dead some time ago — and the fi rst traceable usage of the word “Halloween” comes from 16th-century Scotland. But at the end of the day, this spooky holiday has become far less sinister than its roots, which suggest that the boundary between the living and the dead is at its weakest on Hallows Eve. Nowadays Oct. 31 is an evening of awesomeness characterized by jack-o’-lanterns, costumes, haunted house parties and — the obvious crowning jewel of the evening — candy. Trick or treat responsibly, and if you get home on Wednesday night to fi nd your pumpkins smashed and toilet paper dangling from your roof, don’t worry; it probably wasn’t ghosts. Probably.
