This Sunday will be the fifth annual Whiteaker Clean Up and Community Celebration, an idea generated by Wayde Love. “It started out with me being on the community council and just wanting to make a really fun, cool clean-up,” he says. While on the Whiteaker Community Council, Love made contacts and networked with Sanipac and community business owners who were interested in cleaning up the neighborhood. He now receives donations from them every year to help out in the clean up. Love estimates that nearly 200 volunteers will participate this year. Since the event’s inception, Love thought wearing costumes would make for a more fun and celebratory approach. The costume types vary from year to year. He got the idea for superheroes this year after missing out on a superhero-themed party. But he also sees the inherent similarities between those who come out to clean up and dress up as crime fighters. “It makes sense because we really are superheroes,” he says. Love estimates they found about 80 used needles strewn about last year and pounds upon pounds of recycling and trash were picked up. “It really is a superhero thing when you come out,” he says. “A lot of people want to do something good and it makes it kind of fun for them to do.” The event starts at noon at Scobert Gardens Park with food to gear up for the day and a speech before groups will be divided up and assigned areas. Costumes are not required but encouraged. There will be live music and a raffle with prizes from local businesses including a gift certificate to Izakaya Meji and coffee from Wandering Goat. The leaves have not yet fully toughened up so most of them retain the bright, spring green that’s my favorite color. Still, the lowlands are drying out. The licorice ferns have turned yellow-brown and are falling off the tree branches. Only the ground dwelling colonies in damp, shady spots are keeping their green for a few more weeks. We notice that very few birds are coming to the feeders. Migrations are over and the nesting season is in full swing. The birds are protecting their territories so they don’t gather at feeders. We will see them again with their fledglings. The biggest surprise for us is the chickadee family using an old decorative nest box which was gifted to us many years ago. Corn cobs, millet heads and lichens were glued to make it attractive to birds but they hardly ever came to feed off it. Just as we were about to take it down because it was falling apart, chickadees started exploring it and now are feeding young. Unlike other nestlings I’ve known, these are very quiet to avoid bringing attention to themselves. Vandals scratching the educational signs along Delta Pond trails brings a sad note to our walks. If they don’t like nature, why don’t they just stay away? No Azolla in the ponds this year but there are lots of poppies. They will bloom summer and into fall with occasional rainfall.
