We are the 49% Celebrating the unfamiliar errifi c news. Our country’s leaders came out in support of marriage equality. How cool is that? More good news, this morning’s email from Wifey: Abbe and Shelly heading to NYC today to get married. Making it legal! This is great. Our East Coast lesbo cousins — like everyone else who wants to give lifelong pair-bonding a go — should be able to get married. Legally. Shel and Ab fi rst exchanged rings and vows years ago in a lovely outdoor affair held on a bright autumn afternoon in Philadelphia’s Fairmont Park. Naturally Wifey and I were fi ne with the lesbian nature of the wedding, but something was weird. The couple had announced that the ceremony was to be a blend of Jewish and Quaker traditions. This raised a slight panic among us Jews, unaccustomed as we are to sitting in silence while bursting with joy and love and opinions. You know Jews and weddings. The canopy, the smashing of the glass, the dancing — these traditions I ‘I’m perfectly comfortable know and love. But a Quaker wedding? with men marrying men Turns out I can be tolerant of — heck, even celebrate — unfamiliar and women marrying interfaith marriage and risk no damage to my own. If you catch my drift. women.’ Shelly and Abbe’s wedding was a —Vice President beautiful and moving joining of hearts. Joe Biden 5/7/12 Luckily, the silent part was just long enough to affi rm the Quaker way (not that weird) and didn’t cause us Jews too ‘I think same-sex couples bad a case of shpilkes (the Yiddish more- or-less equivalent of ants in the pants). should be able to get The guests — a fortifying blend of married.’ queer and queer-friendly family and — President Barack Obama friends — did fi ne. The brides beamed they received blessings from their 5/9/12 as kids, cousins, co-workers, ex-lovers, aunts, uncles — everyone except Uncle Sam. Ahem. ‘Woo-hoo!’ Even getting a license now from — Me New York won’t grant Shel and Ab full marriage equality. That’s still reserved for opposite-sex unions — you know, those sanctifi ed marriages with the 51 percent divorce rate. Not that we homos and homettes are guaranteed better stats. In the few places without marriage discrimination, our divorce rate is approaching the bar set by hets. But doesn’t that speak to our ultimate equality? Nobody should be denied a chance to be in the 49 percent. Still, an actual marriage license is a big deal. Granted, it’s just one more big deal in the series of big deals we undocumented marry-ers must traverse on our long march toward equality. But Wifey and I should send fl owers or chocolates or wine, or maybe something less temporary, less destined to be consumed or to wilt. Something substantial to symbolize the signifi cance of being pronounced married by an offi cial offi ciant. I part ways with Joni Mitchell on not needing a piece of paper from City Hall. We do need it because legal marriage does mean something. If it didn’t, zealots wouldn’t be hell-bent on restricting who’s entitled to it. And I wouldn’t be sitting here wracking my brain for the perfect marriage gift. Hard to top the Prez and Veep giving the gift of real hope that we’ll see marriage equality in our lifetime. For our part, we could donate in their honor to FreedomtoMarry.org. That’d be a fi tting tradition.
