As time goes on, a media-perpetrated conglomeration of incorrect assumptions, identities and images surrounding Asia and the Pacifi c Islands continues to form an ethnocentric and sorely misinformed perspective of what is, in reality, a rich and diverse culture. Thankfully, the folks behind the DisOrient Asian and Pacifi c Islander American Film Festival of Oregon know the power of media as well, as they’ve been demonstrating for six years with a grass-roots fi lm festival. Entirely volunteer run, the annual festival uses fi lm as a medium for healing and inciting change. This year’ festival showcases 11 fi lms that display the experiences of humans as they truly occur — not as false media portrayals that keep people of Asian and South Pacifi c descent locked in a cage of “oriental” stereotypes.
