At the elbow of my Grandpa Smitty, who worked during the day as a tool and die maker, I learned how to turn a screw, plane a board and swear in Canadian. Having lived through the depression in the Midwest my grandfather never threw anything out. He simply fixed it and often improved it in the process. He lived on a small farm and taught me how to drive a tractor, secure the chickens in the coop after a midnight raccoon raid and rebuild a go-cart after I crashed it into a wall. I was fascinated with his tools and the way he was able to make something broken work again. Born in Michigan, I earned an Electrical and Mechanical Engineering degree from Michigan Tech in the Upper Peninsula. I have worked in drafting, sign painting, home repair, costume making and even life- size mechanical puppetry. Since moving to Eugene in 1993, I have owned my own woodworking business, Funhouse Productions, and I specialize in built-in furniture. I am at my best when I take on projects that combine technical problem solving with imagination. When you add fine woodworking to that equation you get a beautiful piece of custom made furniture that is unique to your home or office. Most of my work includes an element of surprise. I build in hidden doors, secret compartments, sliding panels or revolving bookcases to hide what you don’t want everyone to see. I have completed projects in many homes in the Eugene and Springfield area and am proud of the work I do. No two jobs are alike and I enjoy the challenges that come with each new commission.
