I began Urban Lumber Company in 2006 with the belief that there is a personal responsibility to save urban trees. Eugene is in the middle of an urban forest that contains more trees than people. These trees are vital to our economic sustainability and com- munity’s well -being. Nobody likes to see trees go away, but when it is absolutely necessary, they should go to a better place than the landfi ll or burn pile. My love of wood stemmed from an early interest in building longboard skateboards. The hobby grew to a side business, San Filippo Custom Longboards. I built hun- dreds of longboards in my garage and shipped them all over the country and even overseas. While searching for sustainable resources to use for woodworking projects, I realized our community is full of amazing trees just wait- ing to be given a new life as specially designed furniture and building projects. Urban Lumber Company handles every step of the lumber and furniture production process at our Spring- fi eld location. Our lumber yard, woodshop, retail lumber store and fi nished furniture gallery are located at 2440 Main St. From logs to lumber, our specialty wood never leaves our facility. After the tree comes down, I haul it to our shop with a crane truck where it is milled and kiln- dried onsite. Urban Lumber Company is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. I specialize in making hand-crafted furniture that is inspired by the material. My current pieces are available at our new downtown gallery, “Out On A Limb” at 191 East Broadway in Eugene, between Café Zenon and Footwise.
