To be entitled to either a 30-day or 60-day Artist and Woodworker “Out On a Limb” I have been busy creating for the past 30 years. My studio and home are presently in Eugene, Oregon. I will be showing my work through the end of the year at a new gallery space called “OUT ON A LIMB” located at 191 East Broadway in downtown Eugene, between Cafe Zenon and Footwise. I will be joined by Seth San Felippo of Urban Lumber in Springfield. I am also a member of our local woodwork- ing guild, the SPLINTERS. I like to think of what I do as ‘functional art’, blend- ing fine woodworking with naturally wild elements. An example would be one of my tables, cut in an irregular shape following the beautiful grain of the wood, inlaid with smooth tumbled river stones in a gentle flowing pattern, atop naturally curving branch legs which reach down and root to the Earth. Tables, Benches, Lamps and Chairs are among the useful pieces I create. I love to be out in nature, being a part of it all, then bringing bits and pieces home. My work allows me to hike, beach comb, draw, and build, thus following the creative process all the way through. I predominantly use native, locally found material including many non-traditional woods. I utilize driftwood, old barn wood, twigs, logs, branches, etc… I gather and selectively cut with minimal impact. The driftwood’s won- derful coloring and patina, along with the natural twisting of twigs and branches offer me endless possibilities. As I walk along, the pieces seem to call out to me, telling me what part they will become. I try to use them in as natural a state as possible. It is tough to improve on what Mother Nature does. I do not mass-produce things. My pieces are unique and one of a kind. Using these types of raw materials makes it difficult to duplicate a piece. I also work in the reuse art genre, using discarded man made items, giving them a new life, and saving them from the landfill. I hope my pieces help people reconnect with nature and share my wonder in the sheer simplicity and amazing complexity of its beauty. I am quite lucky to be doing some- thing I enjoy for what most folks call ‘work’. Please contact me at 541-342-5937 to learn more about my work and come visit us at “Out on a Limb” 191 East Broadway, Eugene. We are open Wed to Sun, 11am-6pm.
