before him, comedian Gabriel Iglesias is a funny
big dude who makes a living being a funny big dude.
But unlike that triumvirate of tragic-comic guys who
died young, Iglesias — in his Panama shirts and with
his legs sticking like two hamhocks out of oversized
denim shorts — doesn’t have that dark edge of self-
destruction that can spell coronary disaster for

enthusiastic disposition as his physical stature, and
hilarity of his King Kong appetite or poking with
subtle pride at his Mexican-American roots. Even
his blue material comes across as clean and family
friendly, as when he talks about the antic behavior
attendant on his 10-year-old stepson hitting puberty.
He also has a wonderfully fi ne-tuned talent for
mimicry (his Bill Clinton is spot on) and other vocal
effects, which he works seamlessly into his
