Tuesday, January 16th Hosted by the Black Student Union (BSU) Unity Celebration and Candlelight March and Vigil UO Gerlinger Lounge, 6:00pm-8:00pm Join us for presentations by student leaders honoring the teachings of Dr. King’s impact. The vigil then begins on the steps of Gerlinger Lounge at 7pm and ends in the EMU Amphitheater. Food will be provided. Event contact: Black Student Union 346-4379. Thursday, January 18th Hosted by Black Women of Achievement (BWA) Katrina Amnesty Campaign “I Won’t Drown on that Levee and You Ain’t Gonna Break my Back” Film & Discussion Walnut Room, 6:00pm-8:00pm This 30 minute documentary captures the evacuation of Orleans Parish Prison, the build- ing of the “Greyhound Jail” inside the New Orleans’ Greyhound Station, and the criminalization of survivors of Hurricane Katrina, placing overwhelming stress on families and loved ones and hindering their right to return. Produced and directed by Ashley Hunt (Corrections) and brought to us by Critical Resistance, www.criticalresistance.org, a national, member-based grassroots organization that works to build a mass movement to dismantle the “prison-industrial complex.” UO Professor Michael Hames-Garcia of Ethnic Studies will be our special guest. Davis Speaks: Radical Frameworks for Social Justice Columbia 150, 1:00pm-3:00pm Known internationally for her ongoing work to combat all forms of oppression in the U.S. and abroad, Davis has been active as a student, teacher, writer, scholar, and organizer; she is a living witness to the historical struggles of our contemporary era. Co-founder of the National Alliance Against Racism and Political Repression, Professor Davis has lectured in all 50 states, as well as in Africa, Europe, the Caribbean and the former Soviet Union. Wednesday, January 24th Hosted by the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity UO MLK Jr. Award Presentation UO Gerlinger Lounge, 11:30am-1pm President Frohnmayer will present the UO MLK Jr. Award, which recognizes university faculty and staff whose various abilities and achievements uphold and exemplify the ideals supported by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Refreshments provided.
