Bumbershoot Seattle’s three-day music extravaganza doesn’t lie when it claims to have a “diverse, genre- crossing” musical lineup. This year’s stars include Kanye West, AFI, Yellowcard and Atmosphere, with more artists being added all the time. Among this year’s literary attendees are renowned music writer Greil Marcus and National Book Award nominee Mary Gaitskill. The American Poster Institute’s Flatstock returns this year; check out the best of underground poster artists and try, just try, not to buy anything. Take a loop of string or yarn and place a piece of it into each compartment of an ice cube tray. Fill with water and freeze for a stylish ice cube necklace. 9. Make your own bubble solution from one quart water, 8 tbsp. Joy or Dawn dish soap and 1 tbsp glycerine. 8. Fingerpaint outside, naked. Clean up by running through sprinklers. 7. Cut off the bottoms of 2-gallon water jugs. Toss water balloons back and forth using the jugs as catcher’s mitts. 6. Three days of conscious music, speakers, activists and more at the Black Oak Ranch, home to many activists and artists. At the Activist Alley, festival attendees can talk to local and international nonprofit groups in between catching performances by India.Arie, Ani DiFranco, Blackalicious, Wisdom, Ozomatli and more. At 4pm Saturday the 16th, a syn- chonized link-up with more than 250 other Earthdance locations occurs, and a song called the “prayer for peace” plays at each spot.
