WHAT’S happening The birth of Galactic (right): In the early ‘90s, two Washington, D.C., punks — guitarist Jeff Raines and bassist Robert Mercurio — moved to Crescent City and became intoxicated by the sounds of the scene that nurtured The Meters, Professor Longhair, The Neville Brothers and Dr. John. Joined by Stanton Moore, Ben Ellman, Rich Vogel and Theryl DeClouet, Galactic treats Eugene to an exotic fusion of funk, jazz and rock at The Jungle. See Wednesday Calendar. For some great music for a good cause, head over to Sam Bond’s this Saturday, Sept. 4, and hear the Zimbabwean mbira player and singer Ambuya Beauler Dyoko perform with Eugene guitar mas- ter Paul Prince and mbira groups Vakasara (from Eugene) and Njuzu (Portland) in a benefit to help Beauler support the 11 AIDS orphans she cares for in Zimbabwe. All these generous musicians are thoroughly grounded in the beautiful traditional music of Zimbabwe’s Shona people, featuring the metal-keyed mbira, which produces a shimmering shower of interweaving melodies. Hear some gor- geous music while helping some folks who really need it. See Saturday Calendar. Eugene artists are making a splash in other ponds. Jerry Ross shows his work in Connections, an exhibit at the Contemporary Arts Collective in Las Vegas, Nev. Connections is a selection of work by four artists who depict people with whom they have close or intimate connections. Gimme a J! ... J! Gimme an E! ... E! ... A reception for Painted Clay, an exhibit by Faye Nakamura takes place on Sept. 2 at Karin Clarke Gallery. Here’s Nakamura’s Sitting with Basenjis (below), glazed and oil painted tiles. This week the walk begins at 5:30 pm at DIVA with artwork from The Labyrinth Project. Then, at 5:50 pm it’s a SLUG Queen surprise, featuring performance art by SLUG Queen Inspira and old SLUG queens. At 6:10 pm the walk moves to Circle of Hands for work by Debra Mathis. Next, at 6:30 the walk features glass art, as well as art of Jerry Garcia at Fenario Gallery. See Friday Calendar. The Eugene-Springfield Solidarity Network/Jobs with Justice presents a Labor Day picnic, featur- ing youth games, prizes, a horseshoe tournament, music, food, political speeches and more at Jasper Park.
