WHAT’S happening For years the British band Steel Pulse has cranked out the hits. Coming to the Jungle, this Grammy Award-winning outfit has stunned fans with songs like “Handsworth Revolution,” “Rally ‘Round” and “Taxi Driver.” Though Pulse hails from the UK, even the Caribbean island of Jamaica knows the band as one of the heaviest hitters ever in the reg- gae scene. A summer studio sale of ceramics (left) by Faye Nakamura takes place at 2695 University St. A popular event in the visual arts communi- ty, Nakamura’s one-day sale is sure to draw a sizeable crowd, so go early for the best choice of her ornate ceramics. It’s not true that some people go just for her wonderful home-made cookies! See Saturday Calendar. Each year the Japanese American Obon (pronounced O-bone) and Taiko Drumming Festival turns the south end of Alton Baker park into a joyous evening of Japanese dance, Asian food and crafts, children’s games and taiko drumming. The audience may partici- pate in dances under swaying, colorful Japanese lanterns. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy this favorite summer event. See Saturday Calendar. Come one, come all to the Once in a Blue Moon Carnival of Chaos at the McDonald Theatre. Scheduled acts consist of puppetry, dance, DJs, live music, spoken word and random vaudevillian madness. In addition, at least a dozen stations will be scattered throughout the venue with supplies for people to paint, color, collage, play games, dress up or just play with toys. Get your funky self down there! See Saturday Calendar. Benefiting the Lynx Company and the White Bird Clinic Crisis Center, A Light in the Dark plays for three nights at the Lord Leebrick Theatre. The play, written and directed by Ezra LeBank, examines a sudden moment after dying, where one searches for some purpose before let- ting go entirely. A Light in the Dark illustrates the vital importance of ourselves and the people around us. See Thursday, July 29 Calendar. Caliente, one of Eugene’s hottest Latin bands, plays a celebration concert for NEDCO’s 25th Anniversary at Mercado Latino at 8th and Oak. Market vendors will sell unique food and products throughout the day, and the local salsa band Lo Nuestro will also take the stage. Other festivities include birthday cake, speakers, an exhibit illustrating the history of NEDCO and a special gift for everyone who signs the guest book.
