That one listed every top three answer — plus the funniest/oddest answer — it was great! This time not every category even had the top three. I know that Paul’s Bikes didn’t get 100 percent of the votes. It would be cool though, if you could put the percentages on there, so we know how close they were. Also, I was disappointed to see Frog’s pic- ture but not read his best out of body experi- ence. And I liked reading the mullet guy’s an- swers, but I was disappointed to not see the guy’s ’do! I understand that space is limited, but you could make some of those pictures smaller. And a lot more was dedicated to restau- rants than usual, which I understand is a big money-maker for you, but I don’t want to see the money side take over (UO/Nike comes to mind) when doing such a great service to the readers of the Weekly! Also, you managed to put what categories restaurants won in their pictures, but some- how “Best Gay Bar” was left out of the pic- ture for Cafe Lucky Noodle. Hmmm. Pete Sorenson Bonny Bettman GIVE US MORE Alan Pittman’s article “Racial Profiling” (10/16) contained some serious flaws in logic and failed to make a coherent argument that Eugene police currently engage in racial pro- filing. For example the opening paragraphs state that police stop black and Latino drivers at a much higher rate than whites, even though the rate of arrest per stop is roughly similar between whites, Latinos, and blacks. But if arrest rates per stop turn out to be roughly similar across racial lines, this actu- ally suggests the police are applying consis- tent standards across racial lines when decid- ing to initiate a traffic stop. On the other hand if arrest rates per stop were dramatically higher for whites, then we would have to suspect that minorities were being pulled over for no reason other than skin color. Steve Kyte Corvallis STUMBLING ALONG It should be clear to many that our Iraq policy is failing. Mr. Bush tells us that the sit- uation in Iraq is “a lot better than you proba- bly think.” But troops are dying daily. Reservists who signed up to guard airports have now been in Iraq for six months with no hopes of coming home soon — in part be- cause even our close allies won’t send troops to Iraq. The U.N. has pulled its staff out of Iraq citing security risks. Bush is unwilling to make the drastic change necessary to salvage the operation in Iraq. His intransigence is putting our interna- tional reputation, our national security, and the safety of our troops at stake. Bush must admit the failure of the go-it-alone approach and hire a new foreign policy team that’s willing to work with the international com- munity. The Iraq War has actually increased the level of terrorism. According to a recent re- port by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, our involvement in Iraq has swollen the ranks of al Qaeda and galvanized the will of Islamic militant groups. It is hard for some to accept the fact that this administration has led us down an immoral path. We are good at nation destroying, but we have a lot to learn about nation building. Christopher Michaels Eugene PRESIDENT MARTY Now that Arnold Schwarzenegger is gov- ernor of California, isn’t it about time to re- call “Lil’ Bushy” and vote for Martin Sheen to replace him? Seriously, this country needs someone who isn’t any kind of politico and has some com- mon sense to take over the presidency and, hopefully, bring power back to the people. Sally Taylor Cottage Grove WHICH THEORY FLIES? In response to the debate following the ar- ticle “Conspiracy Theories,” (9/11) about Mark Robinowitz and the question of “did Bush know in advance about Sept. 11?,” I have something to say. The relevant question is no longer “Is the conspiracy theory true?” but “Which one is true?” Hardly anyone even bothers to deny anymore that for at least 30 years the CIA has been involved in illicit drug trafficking oper- ations to fund undeclared wars in Southeast Asia, South America, and the Middle East! They have been blamed for knowingly and intentionally starting the crack cocaine epi- demic in Southern California to destabilize the black community. On the domestic front, the FBI or their ac- quaintances are widely acknowledged to have murdered Fred Hampton in his bed, as- sassinated Martin Luther King Jr., and killed or incarcerated uncounted other African American and Native American political ac- tivists. At the city level, the local police in dozens of cities have recently been exposed in bla- tant cases of corruption, racism, and sexual harassment, yet when caught they don’t even lose their jobs, let alone go to prison, except in the most flagrant of cases. Can anyone reasonably argue that this system is working? Does it really even matter whether George W. knew about the airline plot? Given his relationship to George Sr., we can be pretty sure he knows about everything else the CIA has done, and if all the truth came out there are probably a hundred other reasons to impeach him on the spot.
