The
100th
Monkey Ensemble
features the powerful
music of two of
Harrison’s friends and inspirations, Charles
Ives and Alan Hovhaness, on Tuesday, April
15. The festival brings one of the season’s
best new music concerts on Wednesday, April
16, when the award-winning piano duo
Quattro Mani (augmented by percussion),
performs contemporary music by UO faculty
member David Crumb, Stephen Scott,
and others. And another estimable instrumen-
tal duo appears on Thursday, April 17, when
percussion masters Charles Dowd and
Tracy Freeze play a delectable program of
vibraphone and marimba in music by Keith
Jarrett, Charlie Parker, Chick Corea and Gary
Burton, and others, including a couple of
Dowd originals.

dominate American artistic and political
realms, one way to
push for progress is
to support these ex-
citing concerts and
the human creativ-
ity and ideals they
represent.

fers terrific opportu-
nities to hear con-
temporary sounds
this month, includ-
ing the Portland
Opera’s impressive
production of one of
the most acclaimed
American operas in
Quattro Mani
recent years, A View
from the Bridge, by Northwest native
William Bolcomb. Based on the Arthur
Miller play, this is the West Coast premiere of
the much-praised production that opened at
the Metropolitan Opera last fall.
And April 10-13, the Firehouse Cultural
Center (see www.NorthPacificMusic.com)
presents a 20-year retrospective of the com-
pelling electroacoustic soundscapes of one of
Oregon’s most intriguing composers, Jack
Gabel, in a mixed-media release
concert/event.
