North Douglas Herald Cottage Grove Announcements From Mike Sauerwein, City Manager Annual Leaf Pick Up Fall is here and City staff will begin the first round of the Annual Leaf Pick Up, starting Monday morning on October 28, 2024. Please go to Leaf Pickup Program to get additional information and guidelines on where to place your leaf pile. Brochures are also available at City Hall. It is important that you place your leaves in the designated City streets and approved parking areas no later than Sunday evening, October 27, 2024. This will ensure that you don’t get missed as City Staff makes their rounds. Placing the leaves out any later will not guarantee that your leaves will be picked up during this round and you may have to wait until the next round of pick-ups, (listed below). If property owners do not have street or parking sites that are approved for pick up or you are not able to get your leaves out before Sunday evening, you may take your leaves to the drop site at the Row River Water Treatment Plant, located at 3300 Row River Road. Two additional rounds will take place the weeks of November 18th and December 2nd. Please take advantage of this program, as it helps keep our storm drainage system clean and operating properly. If you have any questions, call the Public Works Maintenance Shop, at 541- 767-4100. One Block Closure on 10th Street from Main to Washington Streets On Monday and Tuesday, October 21st & 22nd, 10th Street will be closed from Main Street to Washington. On Wednesday, October 23rd, 10th Street will be closed in the same location to install the new water tower base in Bohemia Park. The closure will start at 9:00 am until the steel base installed. Traffic will be detoured around the closure on Washington east to 11th Street to Main Street. Sewer Line Repair Project Beginning November 4th The City has contracted with H & J Construction to replace three sewer lines using the pipe bursting technology. This is where a new line is pulled through the existing sewer line minimizing the amount of ground disturbance needed to replace the line. The first sewer line repair will be between Polk and Taylor from 10th Street to 13th Street. The second sewer line is between Jefferson and Madison from 10th Street to 13th Street. The final line is between Jefferson and Adams from 10th to 11th Street. The work is expected to take approximately 3 months to complete. On Monday, October 21st, the City will hold a meeting with the effected property owners at City Hall in the Council Chambers starting at 5:30 pm. H & J Construction, Branch Engineering and City staff will be present to share project details and answer questions. November 2024 Continued from Page 5 Page 7 Elk Creek Glass business, but it’s a special honor to be trusted to create memorial art. Avi Zohar also teaches glass fusing. Fused glass takes various forms of cold glass like sheet glass, ground glass (frit) and sticks of glass called cane, and uses these like a mosaic to make images, patterns, and designs. The work is done “cold” so it appeals to a much broader batch of students that might have worried about the heat of glass blowing. The glass fusing students come from a big range of backgrounds and ages. Most have no experience at all, and he teaches them the types of glass, the tools, and basics of design. Some students have had previous experience with stained glass and they already know how to cut glass. He’s also had quite a few quilters take the class, and their experience with choosing colors and playing with geometric shapes and patterns has been exciting. They’ve really taken to glass fusing quickly. Making garden art was the most popular fusing class over the summer, and Elk Creek Glass expects that will grow more next year. It’s a great beginner project and students can make 1-3 pieces in a couple hours depending on how complex they go. Glass fusing worked well for groups. The fusing studio could have 6-8 people in a class. They hosted a “tween” birthday party with the 11-13 year olds making some really wild garden art. There was also a company retreat for a small organization, where everyone learned the basics cutting and assembling glass together and each one made very unique pieces. He is excited about starting into Good News for Yoncalla Beautification Projects The Yoncalla Beautification Committee recently was notified that its Federal non- profit status has been renewed. This allows tax deductible status for all donations and contributions made to the Committee. Mary Ellen Lasswell, Committee president, received confirmation of how the non-profit status benefits the community when she received a phone call from an anonymous donor pledging matching funds up to $5000 for community beautification projects. This pledge has the potential to become a $10,000 donation. Public donations are vital for the completion of Beautification Committee projects as the committee has no base financial support. At the October 24 meeting, Committee members conducted a brain-storming session to discuss proposed projects for the coming year. A current proposal is to increase the number of hanging flower baskets on Eagle Valley Road and Main Street. Metal posts for the baskets would be built by Yoncalla High School shop students. Another proposal is to update and replace signs listing services within Yoncalla. The Committee encourages attendance by anyone who has ideas for “improving the livability for our community while reflecting the pride of our small town.” Beautification Project meetings are regularly held the 4th Thursday of each month beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Community Center. The next meeting date is November 28th. year two for the school and he’ll be launching the new classes in November . He will have a 4 week (one night a week) class on making ornaments, that will run in early December. He will also be launching a full ‘beginning glass fusing” course that will run for 8 weeks and teach several different techniques through many projects that students will make and be able to take home at the end of the course. Avi finds that around the holidays, visiting families will book a session for their own private class, to make a memory together. He books both glass blowing and fusing on this custom schedule. Of course, there is an accumulation of example pieces that he makes throughout the year and these will be for sale in the gift shop at Elkton Community Education Center on Hwy 38 and some are also listed for sale on the website.
