Duane S ch u yle r K napp was born in W oodland. Wash . on Nov. 24. 1911. He g raduated fro m M o la lla H igh School in 1929 and attended the Oregon N o rm a l School in M onm outh, w here he received his te aching c e r tific a te M oving to the Sandy a rea, he ta u g h t at B u ll Hun and Sandy E le m e n ta ry schools lie la te r served as p rin c ip a l at Sandy E le m e n ta ry W hile w o rk in g as a p rin c ip a l, Duane also began w o rkin g in the log g ing in d u stry In 1942 he entered the U S A rm y to erve in the E uropean T h e a te r A fte r his d isch a rg e in 1945. he re tu rn e d to Sandy to te a i li and continue logging In the mid-1950s he in corporated his logging business, w hich was c a ll ed the S kylin e D ig g in g Co Besides h i i ini he was a p a rtn e r in E irw uod \ ent e r, a \ eneer plant east of Sandy, and la te i M ountain E ir L u m b e r C o ., w hich ha- its headquarters in Salem On Feb 12. 1955. he was m a rrie d to M adeline Bates They made th e ir p e rm anent home in Sandy, where they raised three ch ild re n In 1970, he began fa rm in g east of Sandy He later re tire d fro m logging and d o s e d tin veneer pla n t His tw o sons joined him in ra is in g ra sp b e r rie s and Angus c a ttle A t the tim e of his death, he was a tn e m lx T of the board of dire« tors of the M ountan E ir Lumber Co. In 1963 M r K napp served as the fir s t president of the O ra l H u ll F oun d a tio n fo r the B lind He was also ac tiv e as a m e m b e r of the Sandy Com m u n ity P re sb yte ria n C hurch In the jia st he had been a m e m b e r of the K iw a m s C lub, the Odd F e llo w s Ix xlg e , the Masonic la xlg e and the G ra n g e Because of his interest in young people, he was a strong sup p o rte r of the schools and Boy Scouts.
