Cochran, 16. is participating in the Rotary Youth Exchange pro gram in the fa ll She hasn't been assigned a country to visit yet, but she has been washing cars, working at Ix-wis Packing and collecting newspapers to earn money for the exchange When Tom Karlen, owner of Mount Hood Refuse, learned that C o c h ra n was c o lle c tin g newspapers, he deided to donate the money earned from recycling the contents of the box outside the Sandy Community Action Center The box contained almost 9 tons of old newspaper with a value, after the expense of hauling it to the recycling center, of 1470 The owner of the garbage collec ting and recycling business also donates to other causes He donates tim e and equipment to participate in the city of Sandy’s annual spring cleanup And after the Mountain Eestival this year, he donated $HOO worth of service, hauling trash out of Meinig Park Johnson wasn't going to bother w ith the survey, but upon the urging of Wilson, filled it out and turned it in. Meanwhile, Wilson never turned hers in Jo hn son , w ho was re c e n tly Joseph B Ackers, a form er Sandy resident who lived here for 32 years, died July 14 at Ilwaco, Wash M r Ackers, who had recently retired from Murray Chevrolet in Gresham, was the victim of a boating accident He was 66 He was born March 10,1921, to H ar mon and Lucy Morgan Ackers in Dadeville, Mo He was educated in Missouri and California He served in the Arm y A ir Corps during World War II He married Alice Van Daam m August of 1944 at Portland A ir Base The couple made their first home in Sandy, where they lived for 32 years.
