It would be good for the city of Sandy. , ix , Paying a gasoline tax is relatively harmless as it only adds a few cents to the price of a fill-up. In the long run, the tax would give Sandy a good road system. The city has 2.5 million square feet of pavement to maintain. There is definitely a need for a stable source of financing for street repair. A better way to look at it, however, is that our streets are an asset. It could be considered an economic development issue good streets will help give people a good feeling about the town. Good roads could help increase property values by mak ing homes more saleable. The gasoline tax is a fair one. It is a user fee. It is true that a person can buy gasoline in Portland and drive on Sandy streets, but in the long run Sandy residents will buy gasoline in Sandy. And visitors to Sandy as well tourists on the way to Mount Hood will buy gasoline in Sandy. Some of the money also would go toward additional hours for the street sweeper. Again, this is an economic issue. Stores look more attractive when the streets in front of them have (x*cn swept. One of the most important considerations is planning. With a stable source of funding, the city can do some long-range plan ning. It can seek bids in the late winter or early spring when contractors are anxious to go to work and therefore willing to work for a little less. . Passage of the Ras tax would make a difference in Sandy. Voters should approve the tax. The fit was perfect It was on sale at half price It was just the right color. I even need ed It. The care label said, "Simply touch up after each washing with a warm iron." I left it there Who needs the pressure? "Do greiKE the set _____ Letters to the editor Thunks, Sandy for memories Over the past 10 years we have had the opportunity to live, grow and raise our family in the city of Sandy Since 1977 when we moved here we have seen growth and prosperity in our city, and have developed many fine friendships that we will cherish for many years to come In July we will be leaving Sandy and moving to New York, where 1 will begin studies at Columbia University leading towards a doc torate degree We will lx* taking many fine memories of this community with us when we move, and Sandy will always hold a special place in our hearts I^urie and I would like to thank everyone for enriching our lives over the years that we have liv ed here In 1979 the Sandy Cascade Soccer Club was developed for youth in the Sandy area With the help of many fine board members, we were able to start a recreational organization that now serves several hundred players, m any e x c e lle n t co a c h e s and referees, and provides activities for many families From this start, other recreational activities such as adult soccer teams and the Sandy Area Ski Club were started using the experience grained from the starting of the youth dub Thanks to everyone who helped! We aLso wish to thank the teachers, staff and administration of the Sandy Elementary District’s schools for the excellent job of instructing our children Through your efforts, our children have received a quality education, which we know is difficult when the necessary items like books, com puters and talented and gifted pro grams are considered a luxury by some. Even though some of the taxpayers in our area feel differently, Laurie and I both feel that the cost of a quali ty educatnon is far less expensive than the cost of ignorance We hope that in the future you will receive the professional respect you truly eserve We will miss this fine community, and our friends while we are gone, and hope that Sandy will continue to grow and prosper in the future. The positive effects of quality k in d e rg a rte n s h av e been dem onstrated through numerous research studies in Oregon and throughout the nation State Superintendent Verne Dun c a n , a s tro n g s u p p o rte r of kindergartens, said recently that, "Research has confirmed what com mon sense should tell us. If we pro vide the right environments for children when they are young en vironments that are safe, nurturing and stim ulating — then those children will experience fewer social, phy sical and leanring problems when they are older." In the vast majority of school districts in Oregon, voters have re c o g n iz e d th e b e n e fits of kindergarten experiences and have implemented programs Fewer than 20 percent of the S-year-olds in Oregon will not have access to public kindergarten during the 1987-88 school year The early years of a child's life form the foundation for all areas of developm ent: social, em otional, physical and intellectual Small in vestments during these years lead to tremendous savings to society as well as to the individual. Most parents recognzie this and now nearly 90 percent of all 5-year- olds in this nation attend some kind of kindergarten or preschool. It is no wonder that the number of 5-year-olds attending kindergarten in Oregon has increased from 34 per cent in 1981-82 to over 70 percent in the 1987-88 school year It is no wonder that in 1981 the Oregon legislature mandated that by July of 1989 all public school districts in Oregon offer kindergarten programs free of charge to eligible S-y ear-olds There is little disagreement that quality kindergarten programs are good for schools, for the community and for children I strongly support the study team 's recommendation Handy Hitz specialist early childhood education Oregon Department of Education S ir ?
