Program unites girls from 2 nations Two girls on a walk in the country near Sandy Nothing special about that But how special it is when months of meetings, planning, and many sav ed francs have gone into making it possible for 16-year-old B rig itte Delorge from Langon. France, and a 16-year-old Sandy g irl, Velita Bryant, to become friends. It started in Langon, a small town in southern France, several years ago, when Delorge heard of NACEL, an international exchange program, from some friends. She saved her allowance and worked as a waitress, mopping floors and washing dishes. The opportunity to visit the United States finally arrived on Aug. 1. Delorge w ill be here until Aug. 28. Bert and Leona Bryant, Delorge’s American hosts, live west of Sandy. Their daughter, Velita, heard of and applied tq, NACEL through Kathy Thomas Box, the French teacher at Sandy Union High School The fam ily agrees that NACEL is a wonderful program, and they look forward to Velita going to France someday. "B ut two years of French isn’t enough,” Velita said. The Bryants are showing Delorge the sights around Mount Hood, Hood River, Mount St. Helens, downtown Portland and the coast. Meanwhile, Delorge has been fo r ming some opinions of the United States. "The clothes styles are not too different, except in the cities,” she said. The weather is hotter here than in her native Langon, though they get lots of rain there too. Her five years of English have helped her become acquainted quick ly She feels school is much harder in France. Students attend from 8:30 a m. to 5 p.m. daily, except (or Wednesday and Saturday afterpoons, and Sunday, and never have less than three to four hours of homework a night. Delorge, 16, has also been to England, Portugal, Spain, Ita ly and Greece. And now, she can proudly add, to the United States.
