The Sflndy Post Editorial & Opinion Lenchitsky leads positive change We strongly urge voters to m a rk th e ir ballots fo r T e rry Len ch itsky fo r the Sandy Union High School board of directors. F o r years Sandy High School has been the w hipping boy of the com m unity, but in the past couple of years we’ve heard a num ber of people com m ent that the school does indeed appear to be headed in the rig h t direction. In the c ity of Sandy, residents who live near the high school thought the closed campus was a w onderful idea. Self- described fiscal conservatives have told us they like the idea of Sandy H igh livin g w ith the same tax rate — actually, less — than has been in effect the past two years. Some program s have been beefed up, and the board knows where the weak areas are. Len chitsky’s opponent, Roland C artisser, is an in telligent m an, apparently a successful business person and involved in his in d u s try ’s state organization, w hich is commendable. Lenchitsky has im m ersed him self in local a ffa irs. For everything the K iw anis Club of Sandy does that is reported, they do another dozen things that nobody hears about. He was involved in setting up the Sandy Job Club. And he has been a p a rt of the positive changes at Sandy High School. What hurts C artisser’s c re d ib ility , in our opinion, is his signature on the petition asking to cut $1.9 m illio n from SUHS’s tax base proposal. To cut $1.9 m illio n fro m the present budget would go way past e lim in a tin g athletics and a ctivitie s, acceptable class sizes o r any semblance of a m aintenance program . M ore im p o rta n tly, it is lik e ly the school would eventually be found substandard by the state, and then the state’s funding would be w ithdraw n. There m ay be waste at Sandy High School, but anyone who thinks it is in the $1.9 m illio n range is dream ing. C artisser said he signed the petition to get the board’s atten tion. We have to wonder if th a t’s how he would do business as a board member. In addition, the 12 percent cut in the vocational education departm ent was the m ore accurate reporting of one salary and the elim ina tion of a position when one teacher took another job. There are two less vocational class being offered, but shuffling students and rearran gin g classes is norm al business fo r a school, made possible by the fact that some teachers are c e rtifie d to teach in several diffe re n t areas. Last year at this tim e there were 716 students in 24 voca tional education classes. This January there w ere 740 students in 22 vocational education classes. There are enough lé g itim ité issues to be debated w ithout fogging the p ub lic’s collective m ind w ith m isinform ation. T e rry Lenchitsky has a fascinating background, a record of com m unity involvem ent and a tru ck load of common sense. He deserves re-election to the Sandy High School board of directors. Letters to the editor Lenchitsky’s record: budgetary increases I would like to share my observa tions with your readers on the two candidates running for the Sandy Union High School board of directors I know Messrs. Lenchitsky and Car tisser and find both to be quality peo ple, active in th eir respective business and civic organizations Terry Lenchitsky has been on the school board for several years and. more recently, as chairman. In the last 18 months I observed Lenchit sky's voting record which has almost consistently favored requests made by the school administration for various expenditures and increasing school budgets. Roland Cartisser has been active in the recent high school budget making process and questioned many expen ditures including classes with only four and eight students, need for in creased instructional support, a 27 percent dropout rate, and Oregon's high educational cost (sixth highest in the nation). In my view, the candidates are at opposite ends of the field. Lenchitsky the more liberal who would continue the “ status quo,” and Cartisser, a conservative with a strong desire to control expenses and reduce the school budget John H King Sandy Lenchitsky works with enthusiasm We wish to express our thanks to Terry I^enchitsky for his past and current service to the community and to the Sandy Union High School District in particular. He is a hard worker at whatever he undertakes to do and he will do his very best to act in a responsible capacity in serving the public if re-elected to the high school board His desire to take another term signifies his intent to continue work ing with boundless enthusiasm tor the good of our students and school. We encourage all who have a vote to cast in the coming election to give careful consideration to supporting an experienced candidate, Terry Lenchitsky. The correct number of full time teachers hired by the district is 82.8 plus 9.5 department heads and supervisors who teach part time.
