Skiing is a fun, exciting sport that can be shared with your friends and family. But m any times we overlook what makes our skiing so safe and enjoyable. Ski patrollers play a big part in preparing the ski slopes fo r a safe day of skiing and in aiding skiers who m ight have a question or problem during the day. Mt. Hood M eadows em ploys 20 full-tim e professional ski patrollers who spend extensive hours training in all phases of skier safety awareness, first aid. avalanche control, public relations and skiing. They are the lifeguards o f the hill and are there to help you have a safe enjoyable day. Ski patrollers are easy to recognize because they are all dressed in navy blue uniform s w ith a green cross on the back. A patroller’s day begins at 5 o ’clock in the m orning when they go out on the slopes to check for any potentially dangerous snow conditions such as avalanches. They mark hazards — rocks trees, o r jum ps — that may be in the main flow of traffic. Not only are these ski patrollers excellent skiers, but they are certified first aid personnel, trained in snow search and rescue, skier safety and snow conditions. If you are ever injured, stay put, don’t move. Yell fo r another skier and ask him to call a patroller As all the runs are regularly patrolled, it shouldn’t be long before a patroller is there to aid you. They are highly trained to handle any situation. Patrollers are on duty thro ugho ut the day to help us “ Be Aware Ski W ith Care.” If a patroller finds someone w ho is skiing out of control in a reckless o r unsafe manner, they w ill stop them and make them aware of their unsafe action. A t the end of the day patrollers sweep the hill to make sure that all skiers are o ff the slopes. Hood The Laser Stones By Richard Kecakemeti Laser Fantasy has created a light show at the Oregon M uscum o f Science and Industry that features the music o f a band often called the greatest rock ’n ’ ro ll band in the world. The Laser Stone's 13 classic Rolling Stone songs, including “ Jum pin’ Jack Flash" and “ Satisfaction," highlight the band’s 20 years o f thundering rock 'n’ roll. Twenty years is a long time fo r a rock band to stay together, but the Stones have done just that. And now Laser Fantasy revives the Rolling Stones, giving their songs a second breath o f air after years o f collecting dust in the back o f record collections. The light show, w ith it ’s high tech 3-D effects, wild, eye- piercing colors and mind-boggling geometric patterns, makes the old songs seem state o f the art. I f you’re a fan o f the Stones, you probably have your tickets already. I f you think you couldn’t stand to hear “ She’s So C old” one more time, think again. This show w ill make you re evaluate the group. Though you may have heard the songs plenty o f times before, the laser show helps you discover just why the songs were so popular in the first place. I f you haven’t heard o f the Stones, you may think rock ’n ’ ro ll storied with Duran Duran and that B illy Idol is the first rebel bad boy o f rock.
