"| â sty J ith the holidays just around the corner, you may be thinking of gifts to buy. packages to wrap and goodies to eat. If you're thinking about having some friends over for a party or just a visit, fix these tasty treats. W Hot Spiced Cider You w ill need: *6 gallon apple cider I teaspoon whole cloves ‘/ i cup brown sugar I cinnamon stick reats F paper and allow to dry. A ja r o f these nuts makes a great gift, too. Make a gift that smells terrific and can be used as a decoration. It’s easy to make, but you must start now. When you are finished putting it together, it must be stored away for two or three weeks. W aiting is hard, but it is worth it. Pomander Ball You will need- Stir brown sugar, cloves and cinnamon stick into the cider. Cover the pot and bring to a boil. Turn down heat and simmer for about 20 minutes. Pour through a strainer into cups. Cinnamon Sugar Nuts You w ill need: I cup sugar H6 teaspoons cinnamon !4 cup water !4 pound shelled peanuts or walnuts Measuring cup, measuring spoons, me dium-sized saucepan, ordinary table spoon, wax paper. M ix sugar, water and cinnamon in the saucepan and bring to a boil over me dium heat. When the m ixture is clear and falls in heavy drops from the spoon, add the nuts. S tir until the nuts arc well coated, spoon out onto the wax Fork or toothpick. Jar o f cloves. Wire hairpin. Scissors, Firm ripe fruit (apple, orange, lemon) Dish o f powdered cinna mon or allspice. Cheesecloth, String, Ribbon or yarn. W ith the toothpick or fork poke tiny holes in the skin o f the piece o f fruit. Push a clove into each hole until the entire fruit is covered. Stick the hairpin in the stem end o f the fruit, then roll it in the cinnamon or allspice. W'rap the fru it in a square o f cheesecloth and tie it closed at the top. Put the fru it in a cool, dark place for two to three weeks. It will turn dry and hard. Remove the cheese cloth wrapping and tie a bow on the hairpin hanger. I f you want to keep your pomander ball fresh to give as a gift later, put it in a sealed plastic sand wich bag and keep it in a sealed box or container If you want to make your gifts extra special, make your own wrapping or J hanksgiuing paper. The two types listed below w ill allow you to come up with your own very special packages. whole paper is covered with designs. Dazzle wrap You w ill need: Heavy duty aluminum foil. Glossy acrylic polymer or white school glue. Colored tissue paper. Paint brush. Snowflake wrapping paper You w ill need. Shelf paper, rice paper, typing paper. Crayons, Doily. Lay a sheet o f foil on a table. Tear or cut tissue paper and arrange in a design on the foil. M ix the glossy acrylic polymer w ith a little water and brush the m ixture over the design, letting it soak through. When it dries, the tissue w ill stick to the foil. School glue works well, too, but won’t be quite as shiny. Lay the paper over the doily on a table or other hard, flat surface. Tape the edges down so the paper w on’t wiggle around. W ith the side o f the crayon, rub over the paper. Use as many colors as you like, moving the doily around under the paper until the Turkey notes By Evelyn Witter ,urkey notes are a Thanksgiving cus tom which began in Davenport, Iowa, in the 1890s. They have been popular ever since. What are turkey notes? Here are some examples: T To make a turkey note write a verse in the same pattern as those above. Be gin with “ turkey” plus a color to match with your rhyme. Copy the poem on a 3 x 5 card or paper. Then roll the card in a colorful wrapper o f tissue or construc tion paper that’s long enough to make a fringe by cutting the paper at each end. Tie each end with a ribbon, yarn or string. Turkey notes usually are not signed so the author can say anything. Some notes are funny. Some are romantic. But most notes are written in the spirit o f the season and with the thought of the coming Christmas season. Turkey red, turkey blue. D on’t end up In turkey stew. Turkey green, turkey yellow , Turkey says You're a fine fellow. Turkey red, turkey blue, Turkey says— I love you. Don't let your party go COLD TURKEY.
