Atiyeh. who for 26 years in elective office had opposed a sales tax, reversed that longtime opposition last year And he has asked the Legislature to refer a sales tax to voters this year "C learly, the only remaining a lte r native is to lock carefully w ritten sales tax language into our state con stitution. where only the people w ill have control of it,” Atiyeh said "The sales tax is a critical component of a comprehensive plan thoughtfully fashioned ” The chamber’s van Gent said the leadership program is intended to a t tract new community activists and as well as to retain those who have been involved “ We need new leadership, new peo ple. new vision,” van Gent said. "We realize we have made great pro gress. We realized we can make a change ’’ The conference is an outgrowth of the 1981 Issue Identification Forum, in which community leaders were asked.
