Sandy, Ore., 97055 Z Topliff selected top wrestler SUHS senior L a rry Topliff took first and was voted Outstanding W restler in the Oregon Holiday Classic in Eugene Dec 28 and 29 Topliff wrestled in the 114 5-pound weight division, and won six matches en route to his first-place finish. It was by a vote of the referees that he was selected Outstanding W restler Topliff had a cold but said he felt good about his performance a t the collegiate-style tournament. Senior Chuck Kearney, wrestling in the 191-pound weight division, also took first He received two byes and won four matches. Loren Bateman, Hui Choi, Fran k McKinnis and Joe Betschart also participated in the tournament, with all competing as individuals and not as a team Betschart won one match, the rest each lost two Choi lost an overtim e match 16-14. Kearney said it was a "p retty good" tournament This was the first Holiday Classic. Kearney's been dealing with a "b ru ised ” shoulder, but said it wouldn't keep him from wrestling Kearney, a class AAA state cham pion last year, has been visited by a number of college coaches, including representatives from Iowa 'w here Coach Dan Gable heads the pro g ra m ), Oklahoma State University, the University of Oregon, Oregon Hw». 26. She said her tim e of 3:24 for the m ile and three-quarter tra il race was "decent.” It was the first race of the season for the SUHS junior She was fourth overall at the state meet last winter. The race was held on the Alpine T ra il at Tim berline. It was snowing during the race.
