, Two project! have kept
SUHS metal» student» busy
lately
Seniors Keith Harvey
and Dave Lund recently
built a cherry picker, used
to pull engines out of
automobiles
Senior Paige Chambers,
and s o p h o m o re s J e f f
Hilliard, Richard G illum
and Gary Massey built a
squat rack, a piece of
equipment used by weight

Lund designed the cherry

Lynn Sondenaa, metals
instructor, said Lund has
about $180 in the project
"Those two individuals
really learned quality con
tro l," he said
Sondenaa added th at
both would like to be
employed in the m etal
working industry.
The squat rack was built

Greg O ’M eara, physical

The metals department
submitted a $250 bid, and
was awarded the job The
SUHS physical education
department is buying two
racks, and at quite a sav

Meanwhile, the metals

about $175 each to make, he
said
He said with the profit
they’ll repair tools and
build up inventory

thing though is that the
students gained experience
in industrial fabrication, he
said
Though one doesn't think
of making two racks as
mass production, that's
basically what they did
They pre-cut all parts,
made a “ very p rim itive”
jig (chalk line on the floor),
and tack welded the pieces
Then they took the racks
to the welding area to com
plete the welding

are for the facility to be

The project took three
days The first day the
racks were assembled and
welded by Chambers and
Hilliard. The second day
Massey did the grinding,
filing and polishing, and
the third day Gillum did the

"In a way. vocational
