C o u n ty
assessor and tax collector,
announced at a meeting
with the Board of County
Commissioners last week
that it will be necessary to
close, to the public, the of
fice for two days each week
if the functions of the
department that are re
quired by law are to be per
formed
He explained that the
workload is as great as
fo rm erly, but with the
reduction of 23 staff per
sons at the beginning of the
1982 83 budget year, the
timely processing of tax
payments is not possible
for the office to still provide
the normal services to the
public
“ Many alternatives were
examined, and the decision
to lock the door and not
answer phones on Tuesday
and Thursday was reluc
tantly approved.’’ Malin
said
Currently, the restricted
budgets have resulted in
sim ilar decisions in the
Clackamas County Clerk's
office which closes to the
public for a portion of each
day
There are several other
counties including Coos.
Linn and Lane which are
s u ffe rin g s im ila r c o n
straints
I wish to express my
reluctance to cause any in
convenience to any citizen
who needs in fo rm atio n
fro m the d e p a rtm e n t.
Malin said He hopes the
public will understand the
necessity for the closure
