And she has a stack of recommen dations from tutors and other teachers to back her up About 100 students are in volved in the learning center program at the high school Six are mentally retarded students who re quire a good deal of special attention, but are “capable of being educated " O th er “ t r a in a b le m e n ta lly retarded" students par ticipate in a Clackamas County Education Service District program, which is held at Cedar Ridge Some in the SUHS pro gram have physical han dicaps, and others are “ learning disadvantaged.” T h e te rm “ le a rn in g disadvantaged" can cover a wide range of problems, including d yslexia and s i m ila r d is o rd e rs A u d ito ry -m e m o r y p ro blems are the most com mon handicap Chambers and her staff deal with “They don’t look han dicapped," Chambers said "Y o u don't know that they're handicapped, but at the same tim e they're working very hard ” Said Chambers, "The m ajority of the students I work with are of normal in telligence. but they have a learning disability, which means in some area the m essage is not being recorded in the brain pro perly '' Some of these students don't attend the learning center "Their pride gets in the w ay.” Chambers said “ So they work hard to com pensate ” Still, special considera tions may be made, like the seating arrangement in a class, for example And, their grades are checked frequently Most attend the learning center for only a class period a day Otherwise they are "main streamed ” Said Chambers, “ We strive for that so they can work with the other students as much as possible.” In that class period they may do homework, but they must also take time to "build basic skill needs.” Students with a learning disability are required to pass the same competency tests as their classmates " T h e y earn the same diploma as every else," Cham bers said, adding that many of them work harder to get it. Camp has an auditory- m em ory problem “ I t ’s just that I can’t read as well as some of the other kids," Camp said "But, I try a lot ” Camp attended Boring Grade School, and is next to the youngest in a family of six Her parents are Gerald and Melba Camp She’s interested in track, and )ogs at least a couple of miles a day She also likes to ride horses, and is in terested in becoming a nurse She’s takin g English, typing, w orld cultures, history and "foods." where she works for Juanita Shuler in the cafeteria She also spends a class p e rio d w o r k in g as a teacher’s assistant to Stan Bowman, a science instruc tor Camp said she feels no stigma from participating in the learning center pro gram Asked why she has stuck with the program when others dropped out. she said. “ I'd rather be at school.” Said Chambers. “ I don't know of another student who is special and unique ing for recipes from people that possess that special quality that a person can call "uniquely their own ” Cox said the cookbook w ill be “ a ch erish ed re m e m b ra n c e " th a t reflects the Mt Hood area It will be something for people to keep whether they remain in the area or move on It will also be an asset in the kitchen Any person wishing to visits 1 2-3 p.m. Sat. & Sun. lx > rra C a m p November-December other information impor tant to post-high school planning Parents are also en couraged to attend the pro gram . which will feature information sessions with r e p r e s e n ta tiv e s fro m Eastern Oregon State Col lege, Western Oregon State College, the Oregon In s titu te of T ech n o lo g y .
