Thur»., Sept. 2, 1982 — 15 Kicker: Brockmueller is a big Charger asset Chances are Columbia High School's Scott Brockmueller won’t make a tackle, throw a block or even get his jersey d irty this football season But chances are none of his teammates or coaches overlook what he means to the Chargers ‘OK, you’re the punter ' ” Brockmueller, a senior, says he feels like he’s part of the football team because he gees through ‘‘Hell week” — the Chargers’ name for the tough conditioning drills of the early days of practice — and as much of daily doubles as he can. The rest of his time is spent in daily doubles with the soccer team Although Brockmueller kicked a 45-yard field goal last season it was only one of two he got to try. Anyone who can punt the ball more than 35 yards consistently, kick a 45-yard field goal, consistently knock conversions through — and has the obvious potential to improve — is wanted And what makes Brockmueller even more special is the fact he's a just a part-time foot ball player on loan from the soccer team where he has been tabbed as a state and na tional all-star To hear Brockmueller tell it, he just about had to hold all the footballs ransom to get the Columbia coaches to notice what he had to of fer “ 1 had to take one of the coaches aside at an intrasquad game and show him I could kick,” Brockmueller recalls. “ I punted the ball about 50 yards so he asked me if I could do that out on the field. I did it again and he says, SCOTT BROCKMUELLER Had to convince coaches ‘ The coach didn’t realize what 1 could do last year,” Brockmueller says ‘ ‘He told me to come up to him this year on third and long situations and remind him I'm ready to kick.” Brockmueller says he’s ready to punt 40-45 yards with at least a second longer hang time and kick field goals from the 30-40 yard range with 90 percent accuracy. He claims to have booted a 65-yard field goal in practice. But Brockmueller is much more at home playing soccer, his favorite sport since he was five years old. He led the Wilco League in goals last season has been all-league for the past three seasons. He says i t ’s been his lifetim e dream to play college soccer, but if , the opportunity doesn’t arise he’ll happily ac cept a football scholarship But to get that scholarship, Brockmueller realizes he has to get more action this year. “ I'd really like to make the Shrine game,” he says. "The coach says they usually won’t drop a full-tim e player for a kicker, but that’s one of my goals along with being all league kicker and punter.” Brockmueller says his soccer and football coaches have been very understanding about his double duties Even his mother, who wasn't sure she wanted him to play football, has warmed to the idea. “ Mom was leery at first, but she goes to the clinics with other supporters and is really get ting excited Now she wants me to go for quarterback,” Brockmueller laughs But anyone who things Brockmueller is just another foot is mistaken He is also a m ulti event track athlete who can bench press 225 pounds and now has his eyes on wrestling to become a rare four-sport athlete RICHARD SEVEN 1230 J&DR K R D R -S e rv in g E a s t C o u n t y fo r o v e r 2 5 y e a r s .
