POST and Recreation Dodson’s Bargain Store wins title b\ SCOTT NEWTON When one talks about men's soft ball in Sandy, the family connec tions keep coming up Joe Kern who without a doubt a contributes to Ron s No Place, twice hit into double plays in the final game of the SASA city league tournament this weekend Dodson s Bargain Store players, because Kern does contribute, took additional satisfaction in turning the double plays Joe’s brother, Mike, was on the mound There are other fam ily connec tions. but none so obvious as the Dodson family itself John Dodson coaches, and his sons Dirk Don and Dan. along w ith Jo h n ’s nephew. Shrine experience was ‘fun’ for ‘the boy from Sandy’ by SCOTT NEWTON Dan Martin started on the kickoff return team for the North in the 35th annual Shrine All-Star game He got in the game several times that way as the South took a 34-7 win Saturday night in Civic Stadium M artin also got playing time in the second half as an offensive guard and as a linebacker "When they let me in there we were blown away so bad it seemed like the other team wasn't even try ing that hard," M artin said " I d id n t have any problems." Martin said, paus ing, "ju st were nowhere " A crowd of I2.4UO attended the game Kearney 2nd at national tourney Dan Martin Chuck Kearney, Sandy Union High School's trip le crown w restling champion, had saved a spot on his wall for a championship plaque from the US Wrestling Federation's Na tional High School Tournament But, this has been one of the few titles to elude him He finished se cond in the 165-pound division for the second year in a row Ohio's Greg Elinsky beat him twice to take the national title The U S W F tournament is considered one of the most prestigious for high school aged competitors Kearney, who wrestled 10 times for the second p la ce fin is h , fe lt hampered by the referees who of ficiated the last two matches against Elinsky Kearney had a 4-1 lead at one time in the first match With seconds left to go it was 4-4, and the match was called because of stalling penalties against the Sandy wrestler Kearney lost the second match 7-2, and again felt intimidated by the referees " I wasn't wrestling well, he said, "but I wasn’t stalling " One of the coaches in Kearney’s corner got thrown ou, of the gym for protesting the stalling calls The Oregon City Steelheaders won their season opener against the Puget Sound Kings 26-0 Saturday night.
