Portrait artist lends hand in home Vem Corban spends a lot of time making a lasting impression with resid en ts in nursing homes th ro u g h o u t the P o rtla n d metropolitan area Through the Church of Scien tology. Corban travels regularly to 15 nursing homes from Forest Grove to Sandy getting to know the residents and drawing their por traits " I ’ve always like portraiture," Corban said after a visit Monday to St Jude's Home in Sandy “People a re the most in te res tin g of anything I know of T h e re ’s something totally different when you’re sitting there drawing The 34-yearx)ld Montana native got intersted in art with the en couragement of his mother who urged him to sketch. Through the years he has had a couple college art courses and "a dozen lessons or so when I was 11 years old." Most of his technique has been self-taught with books checked out of libraries. When he isn't visiting nursing homes drawing pencil portraits of residents, he’s drawing ink por traits of homes—his biggest source of income "Ink drawings of homes sell the best You have to hit people where they live," he said, smiling. " I guess that's what I ’ve done ” But it's the portraiture that he does at homes like St Jude's that brings the greatest satisfaction It boosts the residents' morale, he said "It's something they can identify with. It's something that’s theirs at the place where they live." Indeed, one nursing home has created a gallery composed of drawings Corban has done of its residents He said St. Jude's has plans to display his works also. Corban works with pencil, he said, becuase it is "a little more controllable" and it’s "one of the more popular forms for quick stuff—it’s easy to deal with pro blems." The program will begin at 12:30 p.m and v ll! he followed with a ques* n- and-answer period He hasn t used oils much in his work, he said "Living off commis sions, I don’t have much time to ex periment.” Following him around, one could see how experimentation could take a back seat to just getting through a week. Along with his regular visits to the 15 nursing homes and earning regular commissions "hitting peo ple where they live," Corban works one day a week as a mechanic ("s e lf-tra in e d ") and welder ("school-trained"), attends lessons every week night at the Church of Scientology's academy in d ow n tow n P o rtla n d and counsels a friend on weekends He admits, however, he does find time to sleep, occasionally. Corban enjoys his visits and ap parently so do the administrators and residents at the homes he visits. ‘ ‘I ’ve never gone anywhere where I wasn’t invited back after the second hour," he said. Persons who have reser vations for the Am trak and Columbia River boat trip will leave the center tomor row at 10:30 a m Everyone is asked to bring a sack lunch to be enjoyed aboard the Columbia Sightseer.
