" I f it works for them, use it ” He knew of no lawsuits in Sandy Locally, former under cover police officer Koland C a rtis s e r, who owns Gresham Alarm, said that the problem with tear gas sprays is, "Most people are not trained in the proper use of them A Io4 of manufacturers don't give you proper information on how to use it " Further, Cartisser does not recommend tear gas sprays to consumers Marilyn Culp, director of the Rape Victim Advocates program in Portland, said. Culp said. "We leave the deci sion up to them " Teri Poppino. chairman of the Crime Prevention Committee on Non-I^ethal Weapons, who teaches self defense and sexual assault prevention, feels that tear gas sprays tend to make the assailant more ag gressive than ever Another concern she ex pressed is the various ef fects of tear gas on d if ferent people ‘ ‘Some people are im mune to it right off the bat." she said " I t ’s fluc tuating " Though Adams recom mends tear gas "as a viable defense," he cau tions that "once in a while it doesn t work ’ He reports that it's a fallacy that a 250-pound man can be knocked to the g ro u n d by te a r gas "There’s not a single pro duct on the market that would knock them down," he said ‘And if it did. nerve damage and brain damage would have to result." No such product on the market is available to consumers Tear gas stops the assailent just long enough for the potential victim to get away With an assortment of different brands of tear gas sprays on the market, it is difficult to choose the most effective one There are methods that can be used to test for effectiveness Schwab said that squir ting the spray into a cup and taking a quick sniff is one way to measure a spray's potential Another test, recom mended by Adams, is to dip a cotton swab in the solu tion and then dab it on one's cheekbone about an inch from the eyes He said one can then determine how painful it w ill be by imagin ing one's face coated with the m a te ria l for three seconds Other qualities in a spray to look for include distance, with approximately six feet being adequate A spray that allows one to turn the cap in a forward position without having to unsnap a cumbersome carrying case is also an advantage. A canister may have to be shaken before use if it has been sitting for a long period of time The c a n is te r should always be carried in the hand when walking on the street or to and from one’s car If it is in one s purse an attacker would be able to get control before a woman could reach for it Many carry a canister on 20th reunion July 30-31 The 1962 graduating class of Sandy Union High School is planning a 20 y e a r re u n io n the weekend of July 30-31 Information is being m ailed to classmates regarding the planned events A number of per sons have not been lo c a te d , and cla ss members are requesting 97212 BUILDERS EXCHANGE CO OPERATIVE 1125 S E Madison Street Room 200 Portlond Oregon CONSTRUCTION NEWS DATA 925 N W 12th Avenue Portlond Oregon No bid will be received or considered unless th* bid con tom* a statement by the bid der os port of hi* bid that th* provision* required by O R S 279 350 (workman on public work* to be paid not las* than prevailing rale of wage) shall be included m hit contract No bidder moy withdraw hi* bid after the hour sat for the o p e n in g th e r e o f or thereafter before oword of the Controct unless oword is delayed for a period e* ceedmg thirty (30) days from the bid opening date The Owner reserves th* right to reject any or all bid* ond to occept only such bid* os may be to the Owner t best in terest* Mr Clark Lund Superintendent SANDY SCHOOL DISTRICT NO 46 p7B2 I 7 B Notice is hereby given that Sondy E lem en tary School District No 46 is applying tor fund* under Public Low 94 142 to supplement the special education program* operated by the schoc ' district These fund, would ba used to provide speech theropy od community assistance in doing so If relatives or friends can d e te rm in e the whereabouts of these peo ple. contact Carl Amstad at 668 6736, Vern or D a yle n e M ann at 668 6476, Fran Will at 644-2032, o r D ennis Cutsforth at 64545645 dltlonol teacher aide time a part time record keeping per son ond monies for out of d is tric t e v a lu a tio n * ond placement* Copie* of this op plication are located at the Sandy E lem en tary School District administration office ond the Special Education of flee in Cedar Ridge School Thi* opplicotion i» open for in •pec tion by any interested partie* P782 5 7 8 Th* Bull Run School District Board of Director* will hold their n * * t regular meeting in the school cafeteria at 7 00 p m on Friday July 9, 1982 Two oppomtments to board position* will be made P782-4 7 8 The Bull Run School District board of director* it now ac ceptmg applications for post tion on the district budget committee Any person who is interested in filling a budget C o m m it** position, is a rest dent of the Bull Run School District and a registered voter it asked to complete a letter of application stating reasons why he or she would be mteresed in serving on th* school* budget committee an d any q u o lif ic o tio n * Deodlm * lor letter* of applico tion it Jufy 31 tt. 1902 Ap pomtrnent* will be mode at Your television can do a lot of good things: teach; inform; entertain. 9 * r And one not so good thing: waste electricity» and money» if you leave the room and forget to trim it off.
