This— in a nation where, ac cording to the National Safety Council, only 10.9 percent o f all motorists regularly use oc cupant safety restraints How many o f these injuries and deaths could have been prevented had seat belts been com pulsory no longer is a matter for conjee ture. In the Canadian province o f Ontario, for example, where the use o f seat belts is required by law. accidents in which safety belts were not worn by 30,206 drivers resulted in in juries to 8 ,7 8 0 or 29 percent, while 370 were killed. In contrast, o f the 265,392 drivers involved in accidents who were wearing seat belts, only 3 8 ,2 1 6 or 14 percent were mjuied, 143 were killed. W ill drivers take greater nsks where th ey’re compelled by law to buckle up? Not according to a study by three G e n e ra l M o to rs r e searchers. Risk-taking— measured in terms o f how closely one car follows another in high-flow freew ay tr a ff ic — was an a lyzed in Ontario, with a seat belt law dating back to 1976, and in Michigan where there is no such law Observers collected data on 4 ,8 1 2 cars and lig h t-d u ty trucks by photographing each vehicle as it passed a reference mark and recording the time interval between the succes sive photographs. They determ ined that 51 percent o f the drivers in O n tario used their shoulder har ness, co m p ared w ith o n ly about 17 percent in Michigan Let our friendly experts help select a gift for you . . .
