Scotch Highland cattle have been re-introduced in Clackamas County by Veral N Smedley of Sandy and E Gerald Pires of Eagle Creek, who intend to start new Highland herds, having ac quired two heifers each and a bull Previously. Highland cattle had been locally owned by Alvar Hen drickeson of Sandy, but that herd was dispersed Scotch Highland cattle are a British breed They are known for their thnftmess, hardiness and easy calving Some call them “hip pie" cattle because of their long hair, but may mistake them for buffalo, yaks or musk ox Historically, Highland cattle have been known in Multnomah and surrounding counties and in southwest Washington There are seven herds in the g rea ter Portland area Added in te re s t in Scotch Highland cattle has developed in recent years as food costs have in creased and people have tended to retreat to more rural areas on small acreages with mixed woods and pasture Recently "C o u n try Journal M ag azin e" cited the breed s adapatability to the rural, small farm setting and the easy manage ment involved The cattle were also featured this spring on K A T U -T V in Portland which highlighted an operation in northwest Washington The Singing Dewey* of Nashville, Tenn,, will entertain June 16 at the Sandy Assembly of Cod Church. Nashville family sets concert A talented musical family will ap pear next Wednesday in Sandy The Singing Deweys of Nashville, Tenn., will present a gospel music presentation at 7 p m . June 16. at the Sandy Assembly of God Church The family group, Levoy and Cleon Dewey and their daughters, Cindy and Susie, has traveled as a unit since 1967. singing across the United States at denominational conven tions, churches, fairs, colleges and have appeared on television pro grams. such as PTL, 700 Club and the Jim m y Swaggan Show They have sung on the Grand Ole Opry, at the People's Church in Toronto, Canada, and in the Avon Shakespearean Theater Recent trips include visits to Cen tral America, Pacific Islands and In dia, as well as Europe A large part of their remaining schedule is taken up by churches and conventions on a regular basis The Deweys, who o rig in a lly re c o rd e d fo. H e a r tw a rm in g Records, have recently been working with LTD Productions, their own music company. Camera club honors top photographer Bob Hawley, 58425 E Marmot Road, Sandy, is the first recipient of the Sandy Area Camera Club’s " P h o to g ra p h e r of the Y ear" award The award, a plaque and >100 gift certificate from Camera Connection, was given to Hawley for active participation in club ac tivities and outstanding performance in club photo contests Mental health clinic moves The Clackamas County Mental Health Center's Sandy office, which has been providing service- for local residents since 1975, is giving up the rented of fice space in Heritage Square Various federal, state and county budget cuts have necessitated cutting back in many public agen cies. As a result, it has been decided to give up the rented office space in order to keep staff available to provide services in the San dy area, The Sandy office of the Clackamas County Mental Health Center began ap proximately seven years ago in a church basement Without the community's and churches' active sup port and donated space, the Sandy Mental Health Clinic could have never started, a c c o rd in g to B lak e Fischer Davidson, super visor of rural clinics. "Due to the cutbacks, it Mwy, 26. Sandy is necessary once again to call on the community to support services by asking for donated space," he said " If we are unable to get donated space, we won’t be able to provide services in the Sandy area past Wednesday, June 30."
