» -S A N D Y ( O r * ) P O S T T h u r» June 3 I » 8 2 (S e t I) Sandy folks to host wrestlers What does Sandy and West Germany have in common** Before long they will have both hosted the AAU- sponsored Oregon Cultural Exchange team * The Sandy people are just tremendous when it comes to hosting something, and helping out, said Chuck Kearney, one of the coaches ‘ Everything seems to be falling into place beautiful He's curious to know, first of all, how Oregon's best will do against an Idaho all-star team The Idaho team will visit Sandy Wednesday, June 9, for a 6 30 p m match at the SUHS gym And. the Idaho team has a 178 pounder Kearney hopes will be matched against his son. Chuck Kearney III The younger Kearney, a triple crown winner (AAA state, freestyle and Greco Roman* is only one of a n um ber of ta le n te d wrestlers on the team He will be joined by 105 5-pound Andre Taylor, 1145-pound Mike Richey. 123 pound Kandy Schim mel, 132-pound Travis Han cock, 143 pound Kelly Ed- valson, 154 pound Junior Taylor, 165-pound Lloyd Hygelund. 190-pound Scott Am es and u n lim ite d heavyweight David Maley. SUHS music teacher, has agreed to teach the wrestlers a couple of songs, including, h o p e fu lly , a c o u n try - western song in German The wrestlers will train in Chicago for four days, wrestling teams from other s ta te s , in c lu d in g Oklahoma Coach Kearney is of course anxious to see how Oregon matches up with other states. Once in West Germany the team will tour, and compete against all-star teams and clubs They’ll stay with host families, probably with the parents of wrestlers they have or w ill compete against T he e ld e r K e a rn e y figures they'll stay in two different homes per week. The tour has been set up by AAU, which sponsors a number of wrestling ex changes and is run by a former Oregonian. . The tour will end with a tournament where at least six other European coun tries will compete.
