2 - SANOV (O r* ) FOST Thurs Moy 37. IH 2 (S m I) Review: ‘H arvey’ hops through cast changes by VON BRASCHLER Sandy Community Players last weekend learned what the phrase.‘The show must go on," means to a brave little theater group To last-minute stand-in Mark Kuntz who tackled the lead role with two days notice, it's sacrificing yourself for the good of the show The SCP production of "H arvey’’ nonetheless opened here last weekend with warm applause and rave laughter. Jim Wilhite of SCP leveled with the audience at the outset, and the half-filled auditorium got solidly behind the Sandy High drama coach with rousing ap plause for his bravery. Many agreed afterward Kuntz may have delivered one of his best SCP performances with warmth and depth of character to compensate for any lines he may not have polished in the two days. He volunteered to stand in for lead Harry McClain whose wife suddenly fell ill A small band from the company of players worried over coffee last Wednes day about possible show cancellation—a deadly pro spect in light of SCP’s shaky finances The players suf fered a box-office flop last go round with •’Tribute" and now borrow equipment and worry over losing their building "The community theater couldn't afford to close its doors one weekend," Kuntz said "There wasn’t enough time to learn all the lines, so I just tried to get the thought of who is this character, Elwood P. Dowd ” Kuntz said the rest of the cast helped greatly by listening extra carefully for his smooth ad-libs, and the audience helped, too "The audience made it very special and really wor thwhile," he said. But the problems of the happy •’Harvey’’ cast beset by a strept throat outbreak and multiple last-minute cast substitutions didn't end with Kuntz' bravado. Just as Greg Tebo s busy job demanded he give up his role to Bill Lawson (who in turn gave his earlier role to Terry Waibel). teacher Kuntz now has to quit the play. Yes, he's quitting after two days of crammed learn ing for only two performances He’s rehearsing as director and actor of another play and also busily com mitted to grading finals and taking a group of students to Hawaii So a new last-minute stand-in had to be found Lucki* ly, Reynolds High senior Kevin Moore knows all the lines from a fall school production, and he's busy now going over notes he took here Saturday and blocking his positions Thursday he'll rehearse with the rest of the SCP cast, and Friday he’ll appear on stage as SCP's third lead in two weeks.
