Photos hv Scott Newton IPs up and over the 12-ioot mark for Chris Crabtree. He took first in the pole vault Thursday. The boys now have a 5-1 dual record. The girls remain undefeated at 6-0. Girls seek state playoff berth Good defense, good pitching and a little luck Put ’em all together and you’ve got a 7-4 season and a shot at the league's second state playoff spot The Pioneers played Sweet Home Wednesday at Canby in the first game of that series A win Friday over Silverton assured them of a neutral site, or, in other words, saved them from that long bus ride to Sweet Home. Patty Gray struck out five, walked eight and allowed three earned runs during that 11-6 win. Coach Gary C urtis’ ‘‘young, good- looking, intelligent" catcher, Allison Carpenter, hit three singles as well as making the outstanding defensive play of the game She had to dive to stop an errant throw home from get ting away from her. She got up ready to throw, keeping a runner on third. Freshman Wendy Heckard con tributed a single Friday, as did sophomore J ill Ingram. Sophomore Maureen Beckett hit a double. Curtis said he feels good about the Silverton game. He said the girls worked out some personal conflicts the night before and he feels they played well as a team. Monday the girls faced Diane Baker and her Canby teammates, losing 10-3. Curtis said, “ 1 was very pleased with our hitting. They were just too spread out." The difference in the game? For starters, three of Canby’s six hits were home runs In the second inning a Cougar freshman "got up and smacked the ball It'd s till he rolling if the fence wasn’t there," Curtis said. Canby has a shredded tire and sand field, which provides superior drainage. “ I t ’s a h itte r’s ball park,” Curtis said, adding that the fielders got a workout on the fast surface. Gray struck out five, walked three and gave up seven earned runs. Baker struck out three, walked two and gave up two earned runs Gray contributed two singles Mon day Heckard, Carpenter, junior Kim Pearson, senior J ill Dahlager and senior Cindi Coleman contributed a single each. The Pioneers committed six er rors, two of them "m e n tal," meaning the kind Curtis has a hard time living with. Still, the errors didn't hurt them that much. "Offensively, they beat us. We did not give it to them ” After the Canby game Gray was sporting a .314 batting average, while Carpenter is .293. Pioneer baseball team drops two during week ‘‘I ’ve aged 10 years this season,” Curtis Heath said at one point during an interview about the baseball team. They fell 12-9 Tuesday to Canby and 6-3 Friday to Estacada They had beaten both teams earlier in the season Calling their 2-10 year a ‘ ‘hard luck season,’’ he added. ‘‘The kids have played exceptional at times They ’ve never played really bad, but you make your own breaks " Mo Contreras turned in a four for- four performance Tuesday He’s cur rently hitting over 400 Mike Lund and Troy Wolf are having better than .300 seasons Against Estacada Stu Hoffman's solo homer tied the game in the sixth. The Pioneers finish up Friday with a home game against Molalla. West Linn, 14-0, is the TVL eham pion. Oregon City was next, at 12-2, with Sweet Home 8-5, Canby 7-5, M olaila 5-8, S ilverton 4-9, and Estacada 1-12 Reflecting on the baseball pro gram, Heath said it won't he long before Sandy turns the corner Canby S IH S 2S3— « IZ « ) i« a ~ i» 2 -a »ai Pearson is .375 with eight at-bats. “ I don't know how legitimate that is, but she’s having a good tim e ," Curtis said, explaining that she’s been play ing more lately. F iis t Baseman Dawn New has a 974 fielding average. She has 69 put- outs and five assists, which includes a couple of double plays at home. The win over Silverton cinched a third-place finish for the Pioneers, the best finish ever in the short history of Sandy girls softball. Golfers miss state trip by 1 stroke The Sandy golf team was a birdie away from the state golf tournament. Going into the district golf tourna ment, held Monday and Tuesday at McNary Golf Course, the Pioneers knew they had to beat Oregon City. As it turned out Oregon C ity’s last man birdied, giving them a 660-661 win over Sandy and the district title. In the overall TVL race Oregon Ci ty tied for first with Molalla, while Sandy finished third. Freshman Kevin Beaudoin finish ed fifth , behind four seniors, thus missing an opportunity to go to the state meet as a medalist. Beaudoin shot 79-78 for a 157. Sophomore Rich Castile was seventh with a 160 and Senior Rick I^ambert was eighth with a 162. That placed Beaudoin on the first team all-league team (top five), and Castile and Lambert on the second team (top 10). Coach Richard Kennedy was also pleased with the improved play from his fourth and fifth players, Darrin Nash and Pete Schmautz. Friday the Pioneers finished se cond out of eight teams at the Beaverton Invitational, held at Pro gress Downs. Beaudoin and Castile shot 76s, good enough for their part in a three-way tie for first place.
