Howard Berger will pre sent a short program of the park s history Documenta tio n of the o rig in a l homestead grant will also be on exhibit P assage of the Homestead Act of 1862 b ro u g h t a tid e of homesteaders to the then sp arse ly -se ttle d Sandy area The Act enabled the head of each household to stake his claim of 160 acres, register it at Oregon City, improve it and, at the end of five years, receive his homestead grant free and clear Nels Nelson and his wife, Hannah, arrived in the 1870s and located a claim just west of the young set tlement of Sandy In the true pioneer tradition, he fell trees for their first home—a log cabin Keeping pace with his in dustrious neighbors, the land was cleared and, along with them, a road was established A section of that roadway remains as Highway 26 to Orient Drive Welches Cottrell MONDAY.
