J — SANDY (O r* ) ROSI Thur» April 8 1982 (Sec I) Senior complex offers family spirit by IM S DILLON The residents of Cedar Park Gardens have been in Iheir new apartments for less than a week, but already the group seems like one big family The project, on McCor mick Drive adjacent to Meinig Park drew from an in itia l list of 44) applicants and almost immediately filled to capacity Just two unsubsidized units were va cant Tuesday The senior citizen apart ment complex, built by Ave and Ginny Brewster with a F a rm e rs Home Ad ministration (Fm HAi loan, opened the doors last week to 20 apartment. 15 of whose rent is subsidized The $675,000 p ro je c t features 18 one-bedroom units for local seniors -tw o designed specifically for handicapped residents, as per Fm HA re quirements—and two two- bedroom units, one of w h ic h houses the c o m p le x ’ s o n -s ite manager In that special apartment is an emergency board which is connected to each room. Sandy Community Ser vices Director Sandra Pot ter Marquardt said housing of this sort is “ always at a premium in this area “ “ There’s not enough low cost housing to meet the need and demand,” she said “ The Brewster com plex helps, but the need and demand continue ” Mrs Brewster, herself, surm ised th a t another complex such as Cedar Park Gardens could be built and easily filled However, she pointed. FmHA is not financing la rg e r apartm ent com plexes such the new Sandy site, but is turning to four plexes and smaller rentals While the new housing project meets a need for some Sandy residents, Pot ter Marquardt pointed out another housing need that exists in the area “ Of critical need in the future is a residential facility to prevent institu tionalizing of seniors," she said “ It would allow in dependent lifestyles " For the independent residents of Cedar Park Gardens, however, their is also a sense of community and help is just the pull of an emergency cord away 26. 27. 4:15.
