* SANDY (Of* ) 8051 Thur» Morch 25 l ' U l t o ») Dams changing Columbia River ecosystems by KBN D I RBIN Oregon Department of Flab and Wildlife The Columbia River has been one of the most rapid ly changing ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest as one dam after another was dropped into place across its massive flow It should come as no sur prise that the changes have had a profound influence on the creatures that live in its waters N e a rly e v e ry o n e is aware of the sorry decline that has occurred in the once m ig h ty ru n s of m ig r a to r y fis h th a t historically worked up and down its course. Salmon and steelhead are having the fight of their lives to re main in existence in what was once the most produc tiv e r iv e r system fo r anadromous fish in the western United States The dams turned a once uncontrolled, free-flowing rive r in a series of huge im poundments. From Bon- neville Dam. the lower most on the river, these lakes nearly overlap each other except for a few re maining free-flowing stret ches on which the dam builders have not yet given up But while these changes have brough anadromous runs to their figurative knees, some species have taken advantage ol the changes and have flourish ed Perhaps most notable among these has been the walleye The walleye is a fish that was never intended by fis h e rie s m anagers to become a resident of the lower Columbia But it did, and all on its own And now it is undoubtedly here to stay and is fast on its way to becoming the subject of a premier sport fishery How the walleye got into the C o lu m b ia is s t ill something of a mystery although historically the species has been released above Hoover Dam in Mon tana and in the Spokane Film to run on Special Olympics Persons interested in fin ding out more about the Special Olympics w ill want to see a film that w ill be shown March 31 at the Learning Center, room 55, at Sandy Union High School at 4 p m Preparations are now underway for the Special Photo by Scot!
